How Your Neck Alignment Correlates To Disease
In episode 98 of HealingMatters, Jason Eagle talks about the proper alignment of the neck. Many diseases are not correlated to the neck being out of alignment. Why Neck Alignment Is Important
Proper neck alignment allows nerves cerebral fluid, and blood flow from the brain to flow freely to the rest of the body. Forward head posture (think people on their cell phones looking down at the screen) compresses the neck vertebrae and can cause a whole host of problems. It can even be correlated to Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Anxiety, brain fog, and more.
There are many early warning signs that help us tell is the neck is out of alignment. For instance, vision is effected. Blurred or double vision, a noticeable decrease in vision, or a wondering eye are all examples. Another warning sign is increased throat issues. A constant cough, a tickle in the throat, or difficulty swallowing. There are also warning signs that don’t correlate physically to the head or neck like anxiety or panic attacks.
The body’s nervous system is made up of the Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (calm and healing). Spinal compression can happen very slowly because of the forward head posture. When the spine compresses, it will pinch the Vegas Nerve and send the body into a sympathetic nervous system reaction of fight or flight. Many of the body’s digestive functions, hormonal production, and healing processes will be negatively effected.
A pinched Vegas nerve also increases anxiety because the brain panics because the weight of the misaligned head is crushing the spine. There can be cardiac problems because the weight of the misaligned head is crushing your ribs and compressing the heart. Yet another example is sleep apnea. Forward head posture can compress the throat and make it harder to breathe and deliver ample Oxygen to the brain.
What You Can Do
When you look at someone with proper head and neck alignment, their ear would be in alignment with their shoulder. One of the easiest ways to achieve alignment of the neck is with a proper cervical chiropractic adjustment. BUT with out stretching and changing the behavior that created the misalignment, the tight muscles and tendons will pull the neck back into the misalignment.
