Causes Of Foot & Leg Swelling
There are physiological and mechanical causes for swelling in the feet, ankles, and legs. Swelling is caused when the heart can’t pump the blood efficiently. The feet are the furthest away from your heart. If the heart has trouble pumping the blood back up to the heart then the blood will pool in the feet. The kidneys job is to remove toxins from the blood and convert them into uric acid/urine. If the kidneys get bogged down they too can create swelling in the legs and feet. If you are sitting too long without exercise it makes it hard for the heart to pump the blood out of your feet.
Mechanical Reasons For Swelling
Our body is meant to walk and stand upright. This is the brains default safe position. Too much sitting can be neurologically and structurally hard on the body. It’s not even natural to sit on the toilet because it pinches nerves in the legs. Squatting unkinks the bowels (check out squatty potty). Sitting in a car or a chair for extended amounts of time is an unnatural position. Three are convertible desks so you can work standing up. There are even some stand up desks that have an integrated treadmill to create optimal brain function.
When the nerves are compressed by too much sitting it decreases blood flow. For example, toe nail fungus can be from decreases blood flow. The dirty blood can’t get pumped out of the feet and it gets stagnant and rot. Dirty blood can grow bacteria, yeast, fungus, candida, and more. Clean your blood and clean your kidneys.
Behaviors To Reduce Swelling
There are several mechanical behaviors that you can do to reduce swelling in the feet and legs.
- Walk more, sit less: exercise and massage therapy (massage therapy blog post)
- Wear compression socks: prevent blood from pooling in the legs
- Use a Vibroboard: increase circulation, loosen your core and hips, pumps blood and lymphatic system
- Super Elevation: lay on the floor and raise your legs on a couch or wall and let gravity drain the legs
- Big Exercise Ball: lay with your back supported on the ball like a back bend
