Why Paleo
The Paleolithic (Paleo) Diet was developed by doctors after studying what humans were designed for and how they ate before the modern grocery stores. Think how a caveman or hunter gatherer ate. People and their diets have changed over time. Not everyone goes to a grocery store and not everyone cooks the same. Modern day humans have developed way more disease. Cardiovascular disease, Diabetes and Cancer are becoming more of the normal as people age.
What Is Paleo
Paleo is almost interchangeable with Ketogenic (Keto) and the Mediterranean Diet. All three of these ways of eating focus on whole, unprocessed, unpackaged foods that would have been available to your great great grandparents. For example, if you had to get food on your own (without a grocery store), what would you eat? The hardest habit to break is eating grains and breads.
Grain & The Gut
The Romans and Egyptians started growing grains and making bread because it was an easy food to feed the masses and keep the workers/slaves fed, cheaply. Whole wheat might be less processed but there is a chemical and enzymatic reaction that occurs with the seed when it hits water or the stomach. Even whole grain with the hull on can cause health problems like Leaky Gut. Leaky Gut creates tiny little holes in the intestinal lining allowing toxins to leak into the body and blood stream causing inflammation and swelling.
How To Eat Paleo
The first step to eating Paleo is cutting out the grains, refined sugar, and processed foods. I know this is a hard habit to break and your body might revolt in the Carb Flu. There is a time period where the body will detoxify and release toxins as it resets your metabolism and stored fat.
The second step is leafy greens and whole fruits. Do not eat processed foods or foods in packages. If you didn’t make it, don’t eat it. Eating out at restaurants will be especially hard because so many recipes have hidden refined white sugar and so many sauces are thickened with wheat.
The third step is choosing grass fed or wild caught proteins and learning how to prepare them yourself. Grass fed beef, lamb and poultry cook a little differently because they don’t have as much fat. Don’t forget about the delicious wild caught fish like salmon and other local varieties.
The fourth step is adding in heathy fats. Nuts are a great source of healthy fat is they are raw and then soaked to release certain enzymes. Healthy oils (no vegetable oils) are another way to get healthy fats. Learn how to make your own salad dressing with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and fresh herbs.
Don’t forget to drink more WATER!! Stay hydrated. Ditch the coffee, soda pop, and other beverages with artificial color and flavors. If you don’t like plain water, added lemon juice, lime juice, strawberries, etc. Herbal teas are delicious and a change of pace.
