Baby animals are hard to resist! Baby chicks are so soft and fluffy and the internet is full of images and articles of people keeping backyard hens. Who wouldn’t want fresh eggs?! And that’s why we’ve started the chicken rescue: Henny’s New Home!

Don’t get me wrong, we LOVE our chickens but we don’t want people to be naïve to how much work these feathered friends really are. They are as much work as a dog… an outdoor dog. These crisp autumn mornings already have us bundling up to feed the chickens, change their water, clean the coops, and collect eggs. In another month, there could be frost and/or snow. Freezing temperatures bring up more challenges: keeping their water and eggs from freezing. They will also require more food as they will be unable to forage for bugs in the snow.

So if you have some of those backyard chickens or ducks that:

  • turned out to be much more work than expected
  • your neighbors are tired of the noise
  • your city changed their ordinances
  • you’re dreading the thought of winter
  • you’re moving

Contact us and rest assured that your hens will be in free range chicken utopia on our gentleman’s farm!

Jason and Katy had an unexpected start to a homestead in 2014. Katy’s father didn’t want to mow the lawn anymore. Before you knew it, there were five sheep in the backyard. Jason wanted a garden, so we cleared some land. Katy wanted some chickens, so we built a coop. Follow us on our multigenerational homesteading adventures and watch how we incorporate Jason’s Quantum Reflex Analysis (holistic health) background at S. Healing Homestead.
